All About Avocados

Centuries ago, the world’s first avocado was grown and cultivated in the lush, fertile land of Mexico.

Today, Mexico remains the only place in the world where avocados bloom four times a year, due to the region’s unique climate and varying elevations. These conditions ensure a consistent production of distinctly delicious fruit, available for consumers to enjoy throughout the year.

Avocados from Mexico have been perfected over generations by expert growers, who lovingly care for and pick their fruit by hand, ensuring premium quality. The avocados remain on the tree until they have reached perfect maturity, which allows them to develop premium flavour and a creamy texture when ripe. When harvested, avocados are green and firm and only start to ripen once they have been picked from the tree. As avocados ripen their skin changes colour from green to almost black and yields slightly to the touch, indicating it is ready to eat. Under its dark pebbly skin, the avocado reveals a golden green flesh that is creamy, smooth and full of flavour.

Besides being recognized as the world’s finest for their distinctly delectable flavour and texture, Avocados from Mexico also help meet daily nutrient requirements. In fact, avocados contain nearly 20 vitamins and minerals and consuming one half of a medium sized avocado can supply 10 per cent of the daily recommended intake of fibre, potassium, folic acid, B vitamins and vitamin E. They also contain mono and polyunsaturated “good fats” that are an important part of a heart-healthy diet since they help lower “bad” LDL cholesterol. Their nutrient boosting properties also enable the body to absorb more fat-soluble nutrients from the foods consumed with avocados.

Avocados are surprisingly simple to incorporate in daily meals and snacks. For instance, a few slices can be added to sandwiches and salads for a creamy texture or a few cubes can incorporated into a post-workout fruit smoothie to speed up recovery.

To be sure to benefit from superior-quality avocados, look for “Avocados from Mexico” on the sticker.
